Important information for your registration

  1. It is mandatory to provide evidence of proficiency at the minimum required level, either through the online diagnostic test or proof of recent completion of English Area courses (courses completed from the 2024-1 period onwards). To register for English 6: The required level is B2.1, which corresponds to obtaining level 6 on the diagnostic test or having passed English 5.

Description

English 6 is the final level of the general English program at Rosario English Area aimed at achieving a B2 proficiency level. In this course, students will practice communicating in English in a variety of situations, using advanced grammar and an extensive vocabulary, with a focus on accuracy and precision in language use. Students who meet the minimum attendance requirement and achieve a score of at least 80 points in the end of the course,  will successfully complete the course and, as a result, fulfill the university’s B2 English requirement. Failure to meet either of these criteria will result in not passing the course and, consequently, not fulfilling the university’s English requirement.

Conditions of participation

Enrolment in the course requires:

  • Full availability to attend all scheduled classes, as absences result in course failure.
  • Access to a desktop or laptop in a quiet, distraction-free environment.
  • Camera on at all times during sessions.
  • Signed commitment to participation and academic integrity.
  • No schedule conflicts with work, internships, or national/international trips that could affect attendance or connection.

Fulfilment of the B2 English requirement (upon successful completion and approval of the course)

Linguistic Competence

  • Use an appropriate range of vocabulary on familiar topics (work, studies, travel, health, etc.).
  • Apply basic and intermediate grammatical structures with reasonable accuracy.
  • Pronounce intelligibly, although with some influence from the mother tongue.
  • Paraphrase when lacking a specific word.
  • Correct some of their own mistakes when speaking or writing.

Pragmatic Competence

  • Understand main ideas in clear conversations and simple texts related to their environment.
  • Engage in short conversations on topics of interest by asking questions, responding, and describing experiences.
  • Write simple and coherent texts (emails, descriptions, narratives, opinions).
  • Express feelings and justify viewpoints clearly and in an organized way.
  • Adapt to common communicative situations, both routine and less predictable.

Sociolinguistic Competence

  • Recognize formal and informal registers and adapt their language accordingly.
  • Use courtesy expressions and basic cultural norms of interaction.
  • Understand and respect cultural nuances in English communication.
  • Show intercultural sensitivity when expressing themselves in international contexts.

Students at Universidad del Rosario who are interested in strengthening their B2 level of English. Students who had an unsuccessful attempt at Inglés 6 (2025-1) or an unsuccessful attempt at Intensive 5&6 (2025-1).

The General English courses are structured into four modules that help students develop their language skills competently. These modules work as follows:

Each class hour covers one module, all of which share a common weekly topic for discussion.
Each student must complete a project that integrates the four areas of study.

Assessment activities:

Performance assessment is strictly qualitative, and the results are reported as "Passed" or "Not Passed." The percentages assigned throughout the course are only for reference purposes, intended to illustrate the student's progress more clearly so they can understand it and act accordingly.

The minimum passing score is 80% out of 100%, determined by the average of the following components:

The evaluation system is developed in only one period:

  • Overall course 100%

It includes the following criteria:

  • Classwork: 50% – including attendance, participation, interaction, and exercises completed in class.
  • Synthesis Project: 35%
  • Test: 10%
  • Self-assessment: 5%

Communicative prerequisites

The participant must be able to:

  • Understand phrases and common expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (personal information, family, shopping, work, environment).
  • Interact in simple and routine situations involving a direct and straightforward exchange of information.
  • Describe in simple terms aspects of their surroundings, immediate needs, daily activities, and past experiences.
  • Read and write short and simple texts such as emails, forms, or descriptions.

Academic prerequisites

To be eligible for enrolment, students must demonstrate evidence of English proficiency. This may be shown through any of the following:

  • An English 6 result on the placement test.
  • Successful completion of Inglés 5 or Intensive 5&6 in the 2025-1 term.

General objective:

To develop communicative competence in English at an upper-intermediate level (B2), enabling students to interact fluently and spontaneously in a wide range of spoken and written contexts, understand complex texts, and produce clear, well-structured speeches, arguing and defending points of view on both concrete and abstract topics.

Specific objectives:

Linguistic

  • Can express him/herself clearly and without much sign of having to restrict what he/she wants to say.
  • Has a sufficient range of language to be able to give clear descriptions, express viewpoints and develop arguments without much conspicuous searching for words, using some complex sentence forms to do so

Pragmatic

  • Can develop an argument systematically with appropriate highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting detail*.
  • Can develop a clear argument, expanding and supporting his/her points of view at some length with subsidiary points and relevant examples*.
  • Can evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
  • Can clearly signal the difference between fact and opinion
  • Can use a variety of linking words efficiently to mark clearly the relationships between ideas.
  • Can use a limited number of cohesive devices to link his/her utterances into clear, coherent discourse. Though there may be some ‘jumpiness’ in a long contribution.
  • Can produce text that is generally well-organised and coherent, using a range of linking words and cohesive devices.
  • Can structure longer texts in clear, logical paragraphs.
  • Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with speakers of the target language quite possible without imposing strain on either party

Sociolinguistic

  • Can with some effort keep up with and contribute to group discussions even when speech is fast and colloquial.
  • Can recognise and interpret sociocultural/sociolinguistic cues and consciously modify his/her linguistic forms of expression in order to express him/herself appropriately in the situation.
  • Can adjust his/her expression to make some distinction between formal and informal registers but may not always do so appropriately.
  • Can sustain relationships with speakers of the target language without unintentionally amusing or irritating them or requiring them to behave other than they would with another proficient speaker.
