Important information for your registration

  1. It is mandatory to provide evidence of proficiency at the minimum required level, either through the online diagnostic test or proof of recent completion of English Area courses (courses completed from the 2024-1 period onwards). To register for English 4: The required level is B1.1, which corresponds to obtaining level 4 on the diagnostic test or having passed English 3.

Description

English 4 from the General English Program of Rosario English Area is designed for students who already have a pre-intermediate B1.1 level of English and wish to continue developing their skills to reach B1.2, according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). In this course, students will develop a project to strengthen the foundations of communication in English, focusing on achieving skill and fluency in language use. Students who meet the minimum attendance requirement and achieve a score of at least 80 points in the end of the course, will successfully complete the course and, as a result, fulfill the university’s B1 English requirement. Failure to meet either of these criteria will result in not passing the course and, consequently, not fulfilling the university’s English requirement.

 

Conditions of participation

Enrolment in the course requires:

  • Full availability to attend all scheduled classes, as absences result in course failure.
  • Access to a desktop or laptop in a quiet, distraction-free environment.
  • Camera on at all times during sessions.
  • Signed commitment to participation and academic integrity.
  • No schedule conflicts with work, internships, or national/international trips that could affect attendance or connection.

Fulfilment of the B1 English requirement (upon successful completion and approval of the course)

Linguistic Competence

  • Use an appropriate range of vocabulary on familiar topics (work, studies, travel, health, etc.).
  • Apply basic and intermediate grammatical structures with reasonable accuracy.
  • Pronounce intelligibly, although with some influence from the mother tongue.
  • Paraphrase when lacking a specific word.
  • Correct some of their own mistakes when speaking or writing.

Pragmatic Competence

  • Understand main ideas in clear conversations and simple texts related to their environment.
  • Engage in short conversations on topics of interest by asking questions, responding, and describing experiences.
  • Write simple and coherent texts (emails, descriptions, narratives, opinions).
  • Express feelings and justify viewpoints clearly and in an organized way.
  • Adapt to common communicative situations, both routine and less predictable.

Sociolinguistic Competence

  • Recognize formal and informal registers and adapt their language accordingly.
  • Use courtesy expressions and basic cultural norms of interaction.
  • Understand and respect cultural nuances in English communication.
  • Show intercultural sensitivity when expressing themselves in international contexts.

Students at Universidad del Rosario who are interested in strengthening their B1 level of English. Students who had an unsuccessful attempt at Inglés 4 (2025-1) or an unsuccessful attempt at Intensive 3&4 (2025-1).

The General English courses are structured into four modules that help students develop their language skills competently. These modules work as follows:

Each class hour covers one module, all of which share a common weekly topic for discussion.
Each student must complete a project that integrates the four areas of study.

Assessment activities:

Performance assessment is strictly qualitative, and the results are reported as "Passed" or "Not Passed." The percentages assigned throughout the course are only for reference purposes, intended to illustrate the student's progress more clearly so they can understand it and act accordingly.

The minimum passing score is 80% out of 100%, determined by the average of the following components:

The evaluation system is developed in only one period:

  • Overall course 100%

It includes the following criteria:

  • Classwork: 50% – including attendance, participation, interaction, and exercises completed in class.
  • Synthesis Project: 35%
  • Test: 10%
  • Self-assessment: 5%

Communicative prerequisites

The participant must be able to:

  • Understand phrases and common expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (personal information, family, shopping, work, environment).
  • Interact in simple and routine situations involving a direct and straightforward exchange of information.
  • Describe in simple terms aspects of their surroundings, immediate needs, daily activities, and past experiences.
  • Read and write short and simple texts such as emails, forms, or descriptions.

Academic prerequisites

To be eligible for enrolment, students must demonstrate evidence of English proficiency. This may be shown through any of the following:

  • An English 4 result on the placement test.
  • Successful completion of Inglés 3 or Intensive 3&4 in the 2025-1 term.

General objective:

To develop the ability to communicate effectively in everyday and professional situations, understanding and producing oral and written texts on familiar topics or personal interest, as well as expressing opinions, emotions, and justifications with a level of fluency, coherence, and accuracy appropriate to a low-intermediate level, allowing for greater autonomy in social, academic, or work-related contexts where English is needed.

Specific objectives:

Linguistic

  • The student has a sufficient range of language to describe unpredictable situations, explain the main points in an idea or problem with reasonable precision and express thoughts on abstract or cultural topics such as music and films.
  • The student has a sufficient vocabulary to express him/herself with some circumlocutions on most topics pertinent to his/her everyday life such as family, hobbies and interests, work, travel, and current events.
  • Evaluar y seleccionar los modos de entrada más adecuados para ingresar a nuevos mercados internacionales.
  • The student communicates with reasonable accuracy in familiar contexts; generally good control though with noticeable mother tongue influence. Errors occur, but it is clear what he/she is trying to express.

Pragmatic

  • The student can understand straightforward factual information about common every day or job related topics, identifying both general messages and specific details, provided speech is clearly articulated in a generally familiar accent.
  • The student can read straightforward factual texts on subjects related to his/her field and interests with a satisfactory level of comprehension.
  • The student can scan longer texts in order to locate desired information, and gather information from different parts of a text, or from different texts in order to fulfil a specific task.
  • The student can identify the main conclusions in clearly signalled argumentative texts
  • The student to can clearly express feelings about something experienced and give reasons to explain those feelings.
  • The student to can write short, simple essays on topics of interest.
  • The student to can write straightforward connected texts on a range of familiar subjects within his/her field of interest, by linking a series of shorter discrete elements into a linear sequence.
  • The student to can communicate with some confidence on familiar routine and non-routine matters related to his/her interests and professional field.
  • The student to can exchange, check and confirm information, deal with less routine situations and explain why something is a problem. Can express thoughts on more abstract, cultural topics such as films, books, music etc.

Sociolinguistic

  • The student can recognise and interpret sociocultural/sociolinguistic cues and consciously modify his/her linguistic forms of expression in order to express him/herself appropriately in the situation.

Cristian Camilo Cárdenas Herrera

Master in Education with a major in Educational Management. Specialist in Business Management and graduate in Spanish, English, and French language teaching. He has served as Academic and Curricular Coordinator of the Rosario English Area at Universidad del Rosario since 2020. He has more than 14 years of experience in educational institutions at both national and international levels. 

Natalia María Sánchez Vivares

She is a professional in International Relations, a Specialist in Business Management, and holds a Master's Degree in International Affairs. She has extensive experience in structuring academic inputs and in the internationalization of education. She is currently the Coordinator of International Academic Offerings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Universidad del Rosario.

Important: As this course fulfils the university’s institutional English requirement, its implementation and evaluation are subject to strict conditions regarding identity verification, active participation, and academic compliance.

To confirm your enrolment in the course, you must carefully read each of the points below, complete the required information, and declare your commitment at the end of the form.

I. Identity verification

For the purposes of control and identity validation, you must present and submit digital copies of the following documents:

  1. A color-scanned copy of your national ID card
  2. Your Universidad del Rosario student ID card

Prior to the start of classes, you will receive an email from englisharea@urosario.edu.co with instructions for submitting these documents digitally (in PDF or image format, in a legible and high-resolution file). Submission of these documents is a mandatory requirement for course participation. Failure to comply will result in the cancellation of your enrolment.

During the first session and throughout the course, you must have one of these physical documents available at all times, as the instructor may request to see it at any moment.

II. General participation requirements

Before the course begins:

  1. Verify the proper functioning of your UR virtual passport, especially your institutional email and access to E-Aulas. In case of technical issues, contact Servicios 2030 (servicios2030@urosario.edu.co) to resolve them before classes begin, as all course communication will be conducted exclusively through insctitutional channels.

 

During the course:

  1. Communicate any requests, questions, or concerns exclusively through your institutional UR email. For academic matters related to the class, your first point of contact will be the instructor. For any other inquiries regarding English Area courses or services, contact englisharea@urosario.edu.co.
  2. Actively participate in all course sessions.
  3. Meet all academic requirements of the program.
  4. Attend the course consistently and with commitment. Attendance and active classroom participation are essential to achieving academic objectives. In-class work is part of the evaluation process and accounts for 50% of the final grade.

In the event of justified absences, you must follow the procedure established by the university in circular normativa 164 of 2023 (link), and submit the corresponding excuse through the virtual services platform to Casa UR.

Please note:

  • The minimum passing score for the course is 80 out of 100. The result will be expressed qualitatively (pass/fail) and will not affect your GPA.
  • If you fail the course, you will not fulfil the university’s English requirement. In such case, you must consult your academic unit for available alternatives.
